Ish-tak-ha-ba, also known as Chief Sleepy Eyes, was a Native American chief of the Sisseton Dakota tribe. He became chief sometime between 1822 and 1825, and remained chief until his death in 1860. He tried to promote peace with whites in and around the state of Minnesota. He was a signer of at least four treaties with the United States government, and met with President James Monroe in Washington, D.C. in 1824.


Scarce illustrated Native American poetry book. Dark red soft cover with gilt title & cover emblem. Small half inch bottom spine fray and inch edge spine bottom tear. Mild cover sun otherwise nice with a secure binding & clean pages. 8 x 51/2 with ninety-two pages plus contents.
