Dark green leather and a gilt title (plus VOL. I.) over a dark brown swatch at the spine with four raised bands and brown marbled boards. Secure binding with a moderately rubbed cover, few tiny nicks to the extremities, and clean pages with negligible foxing. The original owner's cursive names are on the front/rear endpaper. Full-page illustrations. This is Volume I (only). About 7-3/8 x 5 with 485 pages. Rare!
According to Wikipedia, George Palmer Putnam dissolved his publishing relationship with John Wiley in 1848. The Preface page to this book has a date of the Twenty-fourth of March 1848, so it must have been shortly after if this was the case.
