Don Coyote: The Good Times & the Bad Times by Dayton O. Hyde 2004
Don Coyote: The Good Times and the Bad Times of a Much Maligned American Original. By Dayton O. Hyde, Johnson Books, 2004.
A rancher and a coyote seem unlikely friends, but in this very personal story, the rancher learns from the coyote that there is a strong alliance to be formed to protect the land. On his Oregon ranch, the author befriends and adopts several coyotes who show him the bond between predator and pest in the managed landscape.
Dayton Ogden Hyde (1925–2018) was an American expository author and proponent of nature conservation. Most of his books take place in rural, agricultural settings where he spent the majority of his life. His books advocate an environmentally responsible philosophy of land management. For example, he encourages the use of wild coyotes, rather than toxic chemicals, to control mouse populations.
