Thomas Jefferson Bible (First Edition) 1904 Signed by Congressman!
THE LIFE AND MORALS OF JESUS OF NAZARETH Extracted textually from the Gospels in Greek, Latin, French, and English. THOMAS JEFFERSON, With an Introduction, Government Printing Office, WASHINGTON, 1904.
Signed & dated (1904) to D. W. Bergstrom compliments of J. H. Davidson (a congressman of the U. S. House of Representatives) on the front free endpaper. D. W. Bergstrom was a renowned industrialist of the early 20th century. He produced fine-quality paper used in book publishing. He was previously partnered with his brother George O. Bergstrom (in stove works) before changing directions and buying a paper mill in 1904 (the year he received the Bible). His brother's son George Edward Bergstrom was famous for his contribution to designing the Pentagon!
This Jefferson Bible was purchased from an old estate in Milwaukie, Oregon (a suburb of Portland). The front & rear covers were cleanly detached & missing when it was found even though the binding was perfectly solid & sound (like new). I had it professionally rebound with the original gilt spine cloth title (slightly delicate) and new French marble endpapers. It measures about 9 x 5-1/2.
1904 was the 1st year of this publication by an act of the United States Congress. Rare, in nice condition!
