The Cloister and the Hearth is an historical novel with the action taking place on the Continent in the late 15th century. Reade introduces various historical characters into the narrative--Froissart, Gringoire, Deschamps, Luther, Villon, and, as a child, Erasmus.


The story centers around the tragically thwarted love of Erasmus' parents.
