The Lens Feb. 1917 Portland, Oregon (Washington High School Yearbook)

Light brown or tan with a fancy black title and a floral basket illustration. This is the student yearbook for Washington High School in Portland, Oregon, for 1917. Secure text block with clean pages and small edge tears/creases. Original owner's name on the top cover edge. Includes ads in the front, rear sections, and the inside covers. About 9-1/2 x 6 softcover book with One Hundred Twelve pages. Illustrated. The apparent original owner cut out the picture on page 5 of the dedication picture, the honorary member (apparently, he or she did not like him).

A frequent question I receive concerns Linus Pauling. I did not find his name or picture, and he did not graduate (left in June of that same year to attend college). The book does not provide a detailed listing of the students. Nevertheless, he was supposed to be there.

The original school burned to the ground in 1922, and a new building was opened (at the same location) in 1924. The school merged with Monroe High School in 1978 to become Washington-Monroe High School. Rare Portland, Oregon history!
